Born on April 8, 1988, in Henrico County, Virginia, Evan D. O’Dell was the son of David and Susan O’Dell. From an early age, Evan displayed a strong sense of responsibility and a passion for helping others.

He attended Henrico High School, where he excelled in sports, academics, and community service. Evan’s leadership qualities and friendly demeanor earned him the respect of peers and teachers alike. After high school, he attended Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and earned a degree in Criminal Justice, solidifying his commitment to a career in law enforcement.

A Career of Service and Dedication

Evan joined the Henrico County Police Department in May 2011. Over the years, he worked in various roles, building a reputation as a compassionate, dedicated officer. In 2016, Evan became a School Resource Officer (SRO) at Freeman High School, where he served as a protector, mentor, and positive influence for students.

His approachable nature, calm demeanor, and ability to connect with young people made him a beloved figure at Freeman High School. Whether offering guidance, resolving conflicts, or simply being a trusted presence, Officer O’Dell left a lasting impact on countless students and staff.

A Life of Service Beyond Law Enforcement

Evan’s commitment to service extended beyond his career. He was actively involved in community outreach programs, youth initiatives, and charitable causes. His selflessness and dedication to helping others were evident in every aspect of his life.

Even after his diagnosis with an aggressive form of brain cancer in 2023, Evan remained steadfast in his dedication to his community, continuing to work and serve as long as his health allowed. His courage and resilience in the face of adversity inspired everyone around him.

Family and Legacy

Evan is survived by his loving wife, Emily O’Dell, and their two young children, Lily (6) and James (3), who were the center of his world. A devoted husband and father, Evan cherished every moment spent with his family, providing love, support, and unwavering dedication.

He is also survived by his parents, David and Susan O’Dell, his brothers, Matthew O’Dell and Samuel O’Dell, and a wide circle of extended family, friends, and colleagues who will deeply miss him.

A Celebration of Life will be held on January 18, 2025, at Henrico High School Auditorium (3020 Hungary Spring Rd, Henrico, VA).

  • Service: 2:00 PM
