A Sudden and Senseless Act
Henderson was leaving the casino shortly before 2 a.m. when a dark-colored sedan pulled up beside him. Security footage shows a suspect exiting the vehicle and firing multiple rounds before fleeing the scene. Eight 9mm shell casings were recovered, but no weapon has been found. Despite the quick response of emergency personnel, Henderson was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Reno Police Department (RPD) is leading the investigation, utilizing surveillance footage, forensic analysis, and public tips to identify the shooter. Officers arrived at the scene within three minutes of the first 911 call. Police Chief Serena Morales assured the public that the department is fully committed to solving the case.
“We will use every resource at our disposal to find the individual responsible for this senseless crime,” said Chief Morales.
Remembering Oscar Henderson
Oscar Henderson’s impact stretched far beyond his personal circles. As an events coordinator in Sparks, he played a key role in organizing local festivals and cultural programs. More importantly, he volunteered as a basketball coach and mentor for at-risk youth, using his time and talent to inspire and uplift others.
“Oscar believed in this community,” said friend Marisol Ruiz. “He spent weekends running free art workshops for kids. His loss is immeasurable.”
He is survived by his mother, two younger sisters, and a large extended family of friends and mentees who are now left to carry forward his legacy.
A Community Rallies
In the wake of the tragedy, the Reno community has responded with unity and action. Local businesses and advocacy groups are calling for improved safety in the downtown area. A candlelight vigil has been scheduled for Friday evening at the Silver Legacy entrance, where residents will honor Henderson’s life and demand greater security measures, including improved lighting and increased patrols.
The vigil is not only a tribute but also a symbol of the city’s resolve to prevent future tragedies.
A Call for Justice
This incident marks Reno’s second downtown homicide of 2025. While the city’s overall crime rate has declined slightly, high-traffic entertainment areas have seen troubling surges in violence. The city council is now reviewing proposals for increased safety infrastructure.
Mayor Hillary Schieve expressed condolences and pledged government support:
“Oscar’s murder is a tragedy for our entire region. We will work closely with law enforcement and the community to restore a sense of safety.”
RPD continues to analyze forensic evidence, including ballistics comparisons and DNA samples. A reward of up to $2,500 is being offered for information leading to an arrest. Citizens can submit tips anonymously through the RPD Crime Line.
Oscar’s Legacy Lives On
Despite the heartbreak, many are committed to ensuring that Henderson’s life and mission are not forgotten. Local educators, artists, and youth leaders are exploring ways to create mentorship programs and community art events in his memory.
As Reno continues to mourn, residents remain united in their pursuit of justice and commitment to carrying forward Oscar Henderson’s values of service, creativity, and compassion.
