Harry Critchley Death & Obituary: The Halifax community is mourning the sudden passing of Harry Critchley, whose life was a beacon of hope, compassion, and dedication to justice. A graduate of the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University, Class of 2022, Harry’s impact extended far beyond the classroom — his advocacy work, kindness, and unwavering commitment to serving others leave a legacy that will continue to inspire.
A Passion for Justice and Education
Harry Critchley’s academic journey was rooted in his belief in the power of law as a tool for change. Before pursuing legal studies, he spent five years as an educator and researcher, most recently at the Access to Justice and Law Reform Institute of Nova Scotia. It was here that he discovered the Weldon Tradition — a philosophy of public service that perfectly aligned with his values and ultimately drew him to Schulich Law.
During law school, Harry distinguished himself as both a scholar and an advocate. He was not only dedicated to mastering the law but also to applying his knowledge to uplift marginalized communities. His involvement in student-led initiatives and his thoughtful engagement with issues of justice made him a respected and beloved member of the Dalhousie community.
Tireless Community Advocacy
Harry’s commitment to social justice extended well beyond the university. He served as co-chair of East Coast Prison Justice alongside Professor Sheila Wildeman, tirelessly advocating for the rights of incarcerated individuals in Nova Scotia. His work on the Halifax Board of Police Commissioners and the board of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland Nova Scotia showcased his dedication to fostering equity and accountability in the justice system.
Harry planned to continue his mission of public service by articling at Nova Scotia Legal Aid in Dartmouth, where he would have worked in their criminal office. His career, though tragically cut short, was already a testament to the profound impact one person can have on the lives of many.
A Life Filled with Love and Curiosity
Beyond his professional achievements, Harry was a loving partner, father, and friend. He shared his life with his partner, Erin, and their child, Wren. In the months before beginning his legal career, he took time to recharge — traveling to the South of France, working on a farm, practicing his French, and even taking up beekeeping with his characteristic humor and curiosity.
Harry’s warmth, intelligence, and ability to find joy in life’s small moments made him a cherished presence in every community he touched. He approached life with an open heart, always ready to lend a hand or share a laugh.
Honoring Harry’s Memory

Friends, family, and colleagues are invited to contribute photos or short videos (under one minute) by sending them to e.arnold@pathlegal.ca.
